APC Afternoon Adventure Club

Don't forget about our awesome new APC Afternoon Adventure Club Tuesday (9/25) and Wednesday (9/26).

Tuesday is Magical Movement and Music. We will be learning about composers, make our own instruments, learning about musical notes and dancing!

Wednesday is Silly Science. We will be making and creating home made science experiments from everyday household items. Our focus this week will be the changing of the seasons and all about leaves.

It's only $15 per child and runs from 12:30-3:30, for kids age 3 - 7. Students participating in Gymnastics are still invited to join us at 1:00 p.m. A small snack is provided. It's a great value, and a great time to get some of those extra errands ran!

During the program the kids each painted their own canvas masterpieces, daubed some polka dot art and then created their own homemade clay from scratch!

Next weeks Adventure will be Magical Music and Movement on Tuesday Sept. 25th.
Followed by Silly Science on Wednesday Sept. 26th.

This program runs weekly from 12:30-3:30. There is no pre-registration required and the children can be 3-6 years old. The cost per child is only $15!

Family!

This week was the kickoff to our second unit of the school year: Family! During the first two weeks we were able to learn all about your kiddos and get them back into the school routine. This week we are building on the relationships we have built with the kids and discussing their families. We will be talking about our extensive family tree's, our pets, our homes, and our siblings.

Playing Family in the Home Center

The letter of the week is: B
Please check your folders for some extra weekend writing practice. Have your child point out "B's" in their daily lives, you will be surprised at how well they truly recognize their letters! I know I was!

Learning how to write B's. Always start at the Top!
Practicing our handwriting.
This week is also the first week we have introduced "sight words."
The word of the week is go.
Each morning we practice a little chant at carpet that goes, "G-O spells go." Each child says the chant, then reads the word off of the card we hold up. As the weeks progress we will add more words per week, but to introduce the concept we decided to start with just one. They have done great so far and I am excited to see how many they can master throughout the year!

Snack time: What letter can you make with your pretzels?

We are also reviewing our color, shape and number recognition. Using these first two weeks to assess our classrooms' strengths has provided a great opportunity to expand our mathematics curriculum to include more complex patterns and basic addition/subtraction concepts.

Keep your eyes pealed for more math "homework" coming your way in your Thursday/Wednesday Folders!

Using watercolors to mix and create new colors.

Working Hard!

First Week Back!

Today was the last day of our first week back! How did it go for you? I know the kids had a great time and they are already falling right back into the school routine.

These first two weeks our theme is All About Me! So far we have learned a lot about your kiddos! Expect to see beautiful self-portraits, pictures of their favorite food, paintings of their favorite colors and beautiful drawings of their awesome families.
If your child has a family photo they would like to bring in for show-and-share Monday or Wednesday that would be great!

We are learning about the letter A and practicing writing our names. Today we sent home a homework sheet that is great practice for writing your child's name. Some of the areas we noticed to work on are:
  • Is your child "pinching" their pencil correctly?
  • Is your child pushing down hard enough to see their writing?
  • Is your child using capital and lowercase letters correctly?
  • Is your child's "helping hand" holding down the paper so it doesn't wiggle as the write?
Do they need more practice?

This website is a great resource for creating writing worksheets and is the one we use here at school to create custom handwriting sheets.

Here is another awesome article from Kid's Health that explains the proper way to teach handwriting.

Here are a couple pictures from our first week back while we were playing out on the playground!

So many new friends and new memories to make!! It was such a blast, I can't wait to see what these little smarties are going to accomplish this year!
